Re: Cheltenham Festival 2013
Simon Claisse, clerk of course optimistic of beating the conditions:
(Sporting Life Article)
Freezing temperatures and snow flurries - some heavy - greeted early
visitors to the track on Monday, as preparations for the meeting were
finalised, but Claisse said that he had no doubts whatsoever that racing
would beat the weather.
"We've been expecting a bit of sleety stuff for a few days and we
might get a light dusting but no more," he told sportinglife.com.
"We've used the frost covers several times, during times when the
temperatures were colder and for more prolonged periods, so those
experiences have told us not to expect any problems.
"That said, I have never experienced weather as cold as this in the
build-up to a Festival. You might sometimes get a frost of -3 or -4C
overnight, but you're usually looking at daytime temperatures that get
up to 10C or more. With the windchill we have got, even the daytime
temperatures are much lower.
"We made preparations to do so in 2007 or 2008, but this is the first
time we've ever had to put covers on the Old Course because during the
winter when we often need the covers it's usually just the New Course.
"We covered the Old Course and parts of the Cross-Country on Saturday
but we've also had to put a lot more rail in because what we don't want
on Tuesday or Wednesday is a loose horse running off the Old Course and
on to the covered New Course. Down the back straight, they're not
divided, so we had to put an extra mile of running rail in yesterday."
Claisse revealed that with windchill, temperatures had fallen below -9C at one stage early on Monday.
"The forecast for us at the moment is for it to drop to -6C tomorrow
morning, rising to a heady 4C in the daytime. Last night it got down to
no less than -1.5C although we did record a wind chill temperature just
after 7am of lower than -9C.
"On Wednesday things are looking better and we're going to start
losing the windchill, but it will still get down to about -4C overnight.
"The plan will be to re-cover the Old Course after racing on Tuesday
night and on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings leave the covers on
until 10am as it is roughly a two-hour operation to get them off.
"Much as I would like to do what polo does and ask the crowd to come
on afterwards and help, it's quite a specialised operation involving
huge covers.
"The cross-country course isn't fully covered but with the race not
due to take place until 4pm I don't expect any problems. I will walk the
course at 4pm on Monday and check that there aren't any areas of
concern, but I don't think there will be. [Claisse later walked the
cross-country course and confirmed it raceable throughout].
"At the moment there isn't a frost forecast for Thursday night, which
means we might not have to cover the New Course overnight for the last
day of the meeting.
"It's hard to be sure about whether it will be soft for the whole of
the meeting, but I see that there is a little more rain forecast for
Friday now, maybe 3-4mm. What I would say though is that we won't get
the scenario where we start on soft and it dries out to good by the end
of the week because we just won't get the sort of daytime temperatures
that would allow that to happen.
Among those out on the track this morning were early arrivals from Ireland, including some of Willie Mullins' bumper team.
"The grass gallop was not frozen at all first thing this morning but
by half past seven it was starting to get a bit crusty in places,
although the trainers were able to use it without a problem," said
Claisse. "I've just seen Willie, who said it was okay but he was worried
about being able to use it tomorrow morning. Fortunately we've got a
straight five-furlong Polytrack canter which we use for the breeze-up
sales that will enable any horses to stretch their legs who need to."
